ON WITH THE SHOW
Welcome to this week's podcast episode. My guest is a close family friend, Chris Williams. He is making his second appearance on the show at a time when our world is going through what I hope is a positive change.
Chris, and I talk about how to help our kids talk about diversity. We parents need to have an open and safe dialog with our kids.
We do talk about grilling and please come back to episode 162 as I will give you an update on Chris as a grilling master.
When Chris was in the military he had what was called a "Battle Buddy." We all need one or maybe a few of these people in our lives.
I did this on purpose but Chris at the time of the recording was waiting to hear if he and his staff had the Coronavirus. They did not.
I wanted to know how his wife Jen, who is white, has helped support him and their two boys when it comes to diversity.

My guest on this week's podcast is Erika Englund. She has a positive way of celebrating her divorce. I am not sure how many of you could spend time with your former spouse?
Erika is a tech founder and the world has changed in the years since my divorce back in 2008. With the explosion of Apps, it is at times a better way to co-parent and even communicate with your former.
Erik opens up with telling her story of how she never won a case as a litigator. However, it did set her up for a path where she is much happier (nachos and whale watching became her "ah-ha" moment) today.
Erika's bio goes a little something like this:
Erika Anne Englund is an attorney, mediator, law professor, and legal tech founder.
Now practicing exclusively out of court, she has mediated over five thousand hours of successful divorce resolutions. As a single parent of two young children, Erika experiences the joys and challenges of divorce life on a daily basis, happily co-parenting with her former husband (most of the time – she’s not perfect). Erika has an unwavering belief that divorcing people deserve better than the current court system provides. It is her life’s goal to work in the legal, educational, and technological fields in order to effectuate this change.
A few weeks before the divorce finalized, we started celebrating “familyversary,” turning our wedding date into something happy, rather than leaving it as a reminder of something sad. There is a great story about how the first familyversary came about (magic? Coincidence? Divine intervention?). We’ll be celebrating our 16th familyversary (2020) next week.

FORECHECK, BACKCHECK, PAYCHECK
Before we start, I need your help.
Please help with the survey. Here is the email I wanted to share with you:
Dear Tommy,
I am delighted we met by phone and I am truly looking forward to staying connected!
I have created a short survey of 10 questions to gather info on how covid 19 quarantine is affecting remarried couples financially.
As you know well, divorce rates rise dramatically for second and third marriages. This survey simply seeks to find out if they experience any greater challenges because of dependence on ex-spouses and/or blended families.
Can you please distribute my invitation to your podcast audience / membership to invite clients, friends, colleagues to participate anonymously in the survey online?

ON WITH THE SHOW
My guest is a long time friend and a very respected youth hockey coach. Scott Maureaux (@scottmaureaux on IG) is not just a hockey coach, he is a teacher of life skills for the kids he comes in contact with.
Scott is also one of my mentors when it comes to blended families. He and his wife Julie have created a wonderful household for all of their kids. They both have kids from previous marriages. I have witnessed first hand how the relationship between all of the kids has blossomed.
I wanted to learn how he learned to be a very compassionate coach and how they built their family unit.
One of the people he mentions is a young man named Tate. When I was coaching Tate and one of Scott's sons Jason was part of our coaching staff. Tate is someone who always has a smile on his face and loves helping the kids on and off the ice. Scott has built a network of coaches that are there for our kids. They understand that hockey or sports, in general, will build many life skills.
I hope that you will enjoy my conversation with Scott and I hope other coaches in youth sports will learn something from this episode. One example is the fact that you do not need to yell at kids.
In the intro, I talked about my thoughts of the way of the world. These are just my feelings and I hope you are not offended but if you are, oh well.
Finally, here is our newest member of our family. His name is Otis and very much a puppy. You will definitely hear him in this episode.
