Welcome to the podcast BLENDING THE FAMILY

BlendingTheFamily.com

Dec 10, 2021

This week my guest is Kimberly Ewertz, an author and writer. Her newest book "Family Redefined: Childhood Reflections on the Impact of Divorce."

I will say this was a very vulnerable episode, and very happy with the way the conversation between Kimberly and me came out.

Bio:
Ewertz began her journalism career as an editor at St. Louis Community College Meramec where she won two Missouri College Media Association Awards. Throughout the years she has written for numerous publications focusing on feature articles where she delights in highlighting people and their accomplishments.

After twelve years of marriage, in 1990, Ewertz filed for divorce, propelling her and her then ten-year-old son into a journey of irrevocable change. That journey is the impetus for her first book, Family Redefined: Childhood Reflections on the Impact of Divorce. She currently resides in Gilroy, with her husband, and two dogs, Murphy and Charlie.

"If you married for love, you can divorce for love"

ABOUT OLGA

I know how it feels not knowing which direction to go when the conversation shifts from "we need to talk" to "we are getting a divorce."

I spent years in "The Limbo of Divorce" stuck in overwhelm, utterly confused, and in fear of making life-changing mistakes. It was not until I hired my coach that I was able to move from paralyzing chaos to organized strategies.

Once I understood what the process entails and how to handle both the emotions and logistics, I achieved an amicable, uncontested divorce that peacefully ended our 16-year marriage.

Well, that happened. I was fired this week. I wrote more about what I have gone through this week here.

Today I wanted to talk to you about what I have been doing to stay positive going through a job loss. Hold on; I did not "lose" the job; I know where it is. So why do we say we lost a job?

Tommy@blendingthefamily is where I am asking for your answer about putting your struggles into GOD's hands and how to go about it.

Thank you.

I am not sure who needs to hear my rambling, but I wanted to share a recent mental event with you.

As the flight from Denver to Phoenix was landing, I was not feeling well. Suddenly, my body got cold, and my head felt like it was in a bubble. My next step was to focus on my breathing to calm myself down. But, honestly, I am not sure if it was a form of a panic attack.

Lately, I have been feeling anxious due to just day job stress.

In the show notes, I have added a phone number if you need help, and I hope you take advantage of the number if you need it.

PRE-ORDER: My Dads Advice At 5:04 AM

Welcome to episode 212 with Dereck Reynolds, the founder of Hug A Dad. We had a very open and honest conversation about how corrupt family courts are.

Dereck's Bio:

Once I realized that my struggle with the family law system was minor compared to the cases of other fathers, I decided to be part of the solution. The Hug-a-Dad Foundation is dedicated to fighting for fathers’ rights while influencing a culture of fatherhood and leadership. While fighting to reform family laws, we also look to better prepare our upcoming generations of fathers on effective parenting and productive husband qualities. The Hug-a-Dad Foundation is heavily invested in building a fatherhood community of men who support the progression of one another. I am also a current candidate for the city council in the 6th district of Wichita, Kansas. Cassie Boyd is this week's guest. Who is Cassie?

"Hello, I am Cassie Boyd, the mother of two incredible young men, who
are 21 and 23. My journey as a mom has led me to the most personal
growth that I have ever experienced. I could not have been as
successful at it, without my sons. Oprah said, " There comes a time,
in parenting, where you go from managing to consult." I couldn't
agree more. Being in the beauty industry for the last 35 years, I have
shared my story of co-parenting with many. I share both the positive and
the negative. I started a YouTube channel called Share Your Heart at
the beginning of 2021, and I also have a blog,
cassiedoesblogging.blogspot.com. My main purpose with both is to shed
light on the challenges, but the most important part is how to move
through them.  Remaining a victim is not the answer.

I am currently in Education, Salon Development, and Training Concierge
for a Hair Extension Company out of San Diego. I Travel all over
training stylists on our brand and also training the new trainers."

Topics that we discuss, what does it mean to be a successful parent, where "share your heart" comes from, and how to lift up your former spouse.

My guest is Suzy Miller. She was kind to allow me to be on her TV show and I wanted to return the favor. Her bio goes like this.

Helping divorcing families to evolve from ‘broken families’ into ‘extended families’ by showing them how to avoid costly court battles and to use Peace as their Weapon of Choice™️.

I am a TEDx Speaker, International Divorce Strategist & creator of the free Best Way To Divorce App. I help clients to save thousands in legal fees by showing them how to make dispute resolution become a successful tool in the divorce toolbox, avoiding prolonged court battles.

I navigate clients towards ways to co-parent successfully - even if the other parent is very difficult and help make sure clients don’t let their divorce harm their children’s, or their own, mental wellbeing.

When I'm not being a divorce strategist, I'm writing screenplays about the human condition in all its beauty. And yes, some of them are about divorce!

https://suzymiller.synduit.com/FTWP0001

We talk about her Youtube show's motto and family court in the UK. There are more things but you will hopefully enjoy where the conversation goes.

My purpose in life is to showcase that there are great dads in the world. Art Eddy is one of those. His website https://artoffatherhood.net/ will clue you in on his purpose of positive fatherhood.

Art and I have some common history, we both came from a radio background, have had diaper challenges, and are both fans of the Reebok Pump.

One lesson that Art shared was what a teacher told one of his daughters what the word "FAIL" means.

When I first got divorced, I was devastated because the family dog Keewee and my son would not be with me any longer.

Keewee was an Australian Shepherd and was truly my dog. I took her to obeisance class, and she was my wing dog.

You will hear an episode on the topic of what do you do in a divorce with your pets? My guest is Karis Nafte, who has taken her love of animals and mediation to create a unique business. Her website is: whokeepsthedog.com

Bio:

Born in Oregon, Karis started training dogs professionally in 1996. In addition to teaching puppy and obedience classes, she worked at the very first doggy daycare in Portland. As a result, she has a hugely varied background in professional animal work; obedience, agility, aggressive dogs, shelter work, flyball, and movie work with animals.

In 2005 Karis came to South Africa on vacation, fell in love with the country, and decided to stay put. She lives there with her husband, daughter, 3 cats, and 4 dogs.

Known for her humane and effective training and behavior solutions, Karis is a nationally known and well-respected dog behavior expert, regularly appearing on TV and radio interviews.  Her training school, Happy Dogs, offers 60 plus classes per month.  She is a judge for the South African Dog Agility Association and a licensed animal wrangler for the film industry.

Karis became an internationally accredited family mediator after recognizing the need for ‘dog-centered mediation’ during a divorce. Now, she combines her wealth of experience of dogs and family pets with mediation to help her clients make the best decision for their dog’s long-term wellbeing.

In June, we celebrate Pride Month. I am so grateful that my friend Jamila Bryant was my guest to talk about her life.  During our conversation, Jamila had several great points to help both parents and kids about her experience coming out to her family.

Love your kids unconditionally. Support your kids. Educate yourself as a parent.

We also talk about Jamila's only nephew Dwon Fields Jr "DJ" who was shot and killed on March 5, 2021.

https://www.wtoc.com/2021/06/18/bluffton-high-class-2021-remembers-slain-classmate-graduation/

I hope you will gain new knowledge and share this episode with other families who might need this information.

I failed to mention one thing about the recording of this episode. Otis was chewing on a bone in my office, and those are the sounds you will hear in the background.

Jamila's Bio:

An 18-year Air Force veteran, Jamila is passionate about personal development and leadership.

Jamila is a talented speaker and the founder of Push FORWARD Development Ltd. FORWARD stands for Facing Our Reality With Action, Resiliency & Determination. Push FORWARD is a personal development and leadership training company that serves the LGBTQ+ Community.

Her company is dedicated to developing leaders, inspiring people to become lifelong learners and to live their life authentically, with pride. She is a Certified Trainer and Speaker with The John Maxwell Team and the author of the inspirational quote brand Quote Junkie Diaries.

My guest today is someone I have been working with to get onto the show for two years. He is a hard man to get a sit down with because he is so busy with his purpose in life. Plus he is rubbing elbows with the Royal Family.

Mark Williams is a Keynote Speaker, Author, and International Campaigner. He founded International Fathers Mental Health Day (always June 21, the day after Father's Day) and the #HowAreYouDad Campaign to help ensure that all parents and families are supported throughout the perinatal period.

Mark has spoken on television and radio stations around the world.  Working alongside Dr. Jane Hanley, he has published articles on Fathers (Paternal) Mental Health.

In 2012, Mark was awarded “Inspirational Father of the year” and “Local Hero” at the Pride of Britain Awards.  On World Mental Health Day in 2016, Mark was invited to meet The Royal Family and in 2019 he was awarded the Point Of Light Award by the Prime Minister.

Mark is also an Ambassador for Mother's for Mother's Charity.

Mark and I really go into the weeds of mental health. We talk about his struggles while his son was being born.

Please check out his TEDx Talk.

This episode means a lot to me because of the aspect of men's mental health. Please share this with men/dads who are in need of understanding that we men need to let other men know when we need help.

Hi!! I missed you so much. My gift to you is a new weekly podcast episode called "Mental Health Mondays". I want to talk to you today about when people are renting space in your head.

Three things to help you evicted those people taking up space:

  • You really have the power to say no!
  • What is triggering those emotions?
  • Journaling could help you identify why you are allowing these people to take up land in your cranium.

Please let me know at tommy@blendingthefamily.com if this was helpful.
